EU rules for national rights on GMOs due this summer

EU proposals to allow member states greater choice in deciding whether or not to cultivate EU-approved genetically modified crops will be issued this summer, says new EU Health and Consumers Commissioner John Dalli. He outlined his plans in March at the same time as granting the first EU approval to cultivate a GM crop in 12 years (see this issue). Mr Dalli has been asked to come up with the proposals by European Commission President José Manuel Barroso, who said last year that it should be possible to combine an EU authorisation system, based on science, with freedom for member states to decide on growing GM crops ( Agrow No 584, p 7).
