EU work on grass genome to aid cereal research

An EU-funded research project has successfully sequenced the genome of the wild grass, Brachypodium distachyon. The work will help to identify key genes in the closely related, but larger and more complex, genomes of wheat and barley, the researchers say. The study was led by the UK John Innes Centre, the US Oregon State University, the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute and the USDA.
