Brazil to set sugar cane weevil controls

Brazil has proposed phytosanitary certificate of origin procedures to control the spread of sugar cane weevils ( Sphenophorus levis). The Ministry of Agriculture’s proposals would allow the transit of sugar cane material from the states of Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais and Parana, where the pest is present, to other states if they carry a permit. They are subject to a public comment period starting February 12th. Similar proposals have been made for transit of sugar cane from states that suffer from sugar cane borers ( Telchin licus – see this issue). There are no pesticide products available in Brazil for use against sugar cane weevils, the national generic industry association, the Aenda, says.
