Canada mulls Bayer's herbicide-tolerant soybeans
The Canadian authorities have notified the receipt of an application from Bayer CropScience and the US trait provider, M S Technologies (West Point, Iowa), for the approval of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant FG72 soybeans. The companies applied to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada for approvals for food, feed and environmental release. The soybeans are tolerant to glyphosate and 4-hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) inhibitors. Bayer agreed to collaborate with M S Technologies and soybean breeder Mertec to develop the soybeans in 2007 ( Agrow No 533, p 1). The Canadian approval application is open to public comment until May 22nd.
