Petition calls for GM crop moratorium in EU
A petition with over 1 million signatories is calling for a moratorium on genetically modified crops until changes are made to EU legislation. It is the first petition to be presented to the European Commission under the “citizens’ initiative”, which became part of the EU Lisbon Treaty in 2009. This requires the Commission to consider specific legislative issues if demanded by more than 1 million citizens. However, the biotechnology industry has dismissed the petition as a “media stunt” that does not reflect the true opinions of the majority of Europeans.
