EFSA clears renewal of Roundup Ready soybean approval
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has given safety clearance to Monsanto’s application to renew the EU approval for genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant 40-3-2 soybeans, sold as Roundup Ready. The approval covers use in food, feed and other products derived from the soybeans. The EFSA’s opinion will go forward for consideration by the European Commission. Roundup Ready soybeans were first approved in the EU in 1996. Monsanto applied for the renewal in 2007. The EFSA has since requested, and obtained, further information from the company. Monsanto received EU approval for its second-generation Roundup Ready 2 Yield soybeans in 2008 ( Agrow No 558, p 12).
