Brazil formulated agchem imports up as ai trade falls

Brazil increasingly imported formulated pesticides from 2005 to 2009, according to the Ministry of Development and Foreign Trade. Such imports doubled over the four years from some $628 million to $1,292 million. However, imports of active ingredients fell by 23.2% over the same period to $841 million. Figures for the year to November 30th 2010 show a continuation of the trends. Formulated product imports were up to $1,527 million, while ai imports dropped to $694 million. The Brazilian generic agrochemical industry association, the Aenda, supplied Agrow with the figures. “The rise of formulated product imports is amazing, as they could all be manufactured in Brazil,” the association says. The Aenda believes the trend “impacts on Brazil’s technological development”. National pesticide volume imports rose by an annualised 12% in the decade to 2010 ( Agrow No 606, p 20).
