France trains 58,000 farmers under Certiphyto

Some 58,000 French farmers have been trained under the government’s certification scheme, the Certiphyto, reports French newswire Agrisalon. The Certiphyto was launched as part of Ecophyto 2018, the French government’s plan to reduce pesticide usage in France by 2018. Under an experimental phase launched in December 2009, farmers have been trained for free and provided a certificate valid for ten years. The experimental phase will last until the end of the first half of this year. Training for the Certiphyto will become mandatory for all professional users of pesticides from January 1st 2015 ( Agrow No 597, p 14). The government views it as part of its response to the EU sustainable use of pesticides Directive (2009/128), which came into force on November 25th 2010 and is due to be transposed into member states’ national laws by December 14th 2011 ( Agrow No 581, p 8).
