US farmers settle over GM rice
Four rice farmers from the US state of Mississippi have agreed to an $873,000 settlement with Bayer CropScience for losses due to contamination with unregistered genetically modified glufosinate-tolerant rice. The settlement calls for potentially larger payouts if a later “global settlement of all such claims” is reached, lawyers representing the farmers point out. The case was due to go to trial this month. Six contested trials over rice contamination in 2005/06 resulted in awards to farmers totalling more than $53 million ( Agrow No 597, p 18). Three Texas rice farmers settled with Bayer in October 2010 for a reported $290,000.
