Australia stands by sulfuryl fluoride
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) does not plan to take any action against Dow AgroSciences’ fumigant, sulfuryl fluoride, despite a planned phase-out on food crops in the US. The move by the US EPA was prompted by concerns over aggregate exposure to fluoride (see this issue). Australian exposure levels are within safety limits, the APVMA points out. Sulfuryl fluoride is approved for use on fewer crops in Australia than in the US and background levels of fluoride in some water supplies are higher in the US than Australia, it adds.
