EU GMO farmers follow good practice
A “very high” percentage of EU farmers growing Monsanto’s genetically modified MON810 Bt maize have implemented measures to reduce the development of insect resistance, says the company. Such measures include the establishment of non- Bt maize refuges in fields. The results of Monsanto’s monitoring programme in 2009 show that there were no changes in resistance of European corn borers ( Ostrinia nubilalis) or pink stem borers ( Sesamia nonagrioides). EU authorisations for the cultivation of GM crops require the approval holders to undertake regular monitoring of the crops and their impacts.
