Australia approves GM banana trials
The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has approved an application by the Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane) to conduct field trials of genetically modified disease-resistant bananas. The OGTR had previously concluded that the planned trials posed negligible risk to humans or the environment ( Agrow No 605, p 18). The University plans to test 151 GM banana lines on a 1.5 ha site in the Northern Territory. The approval runs until November 2014. The licence conditions include a 10 m zone around the trial site where no bananas can be grown.
