Southern African farmers push for GM crops

Farmer unions belonging to 12 of the 14 member countries of the Southern African Development Community have signed a common policy framework on genetically modified crops, reports South African newswire The Southern African Confederation of Agriculture Unions (SACAU) has urged governments to harmonise policies on GM crops and establish a biosafety framework for the region to create an enabling regulatory environment for GM crops. Farming communities in the region, where GM crop cultivation is not allowed, are feeling left out as their counterparts growing such crops in South Africa, Egypt and Burkina Faso are improving productivity and incomes, BusinessDay reports.
