Spain grants interim dichlorvos approval
Spain has granted emergency authorisation for the sale of the organophosphate insecticide, dichlorvos, for use in traps for the control of Mediterranean fruit flies ( Ceratitis capitata). The 120-day approval is for monitoring and mass capture of the flies on citrus and other fruit trees and grapevines. It runs from June 15th to October 14th inclusive. The Ministry of Agriculture accepted the petition for approval from the regional governments of Andalusia, Murcia and Valencia, due to the lack of approved insecticides for fruit fly control. The EU phased out use of dichlorvos by the end of 2007 ( Agrow No 522, p 6).
