Nigerian Parliament passes biosafety bill

Nigeria’s Parliament has passed biosafety legislation that would pave the way for the commercialisation of genetically modified crops. The upper house, the Senate, passed the bill on June 1st, the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology in Africa, the OFAB, reports. It was approved without amendments to the draft bill passed by the lower house in July last year. The law awaits the President’s assent. The passing of the bill is a major step towards the responsible use of GM crops, the OFAB says. If ratified, Nigeria would follow African countries including Kenya, Cameroon, Tanzania, Malawi, Mauritius, South Africa, Burkina Faso, Namibia, Mali and Zimbabwe in adopting such legislation ( Agrow No 559, p 21).
