USDA proposes Enlist maize deregulation
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has proposed the deregulation of Dow AgroSciences’ genetically modified herbicide-tolerant Enlist maize (DAS-40278-9). The maize is tolerant to the phenoxy herbicide, 2,4-D, and aryloxyphenoxy propionate inhibitor graminicides. The company applied for USDA deregulation in 2009 ( Agrow No 575, p 30). The APHIS has issued a plant pest risk assessment and a draft environmental assessment, which are open to public comment until February 27th 2012. Dow completed the voluntary consultation process with the Food and Drug Administration over Enlist maize in December ( Agrow No 630, p 22). Commercialisation is scheduled for 2013.
