Brazilian GM maize to expand further

Monsanto predicts a larger area for Brazil’s genetically modified maize in 2012/13 than last year and that stacked traits will dominate. Planting in the first of the two maize seasons, starting in March, is expected to consist of some 82% of GM lines, Monsanto says. Companies report that the adoption of lines including resistance to above- and below-ground pests as well as tolerance to herbicides is becoming increasingly significant. Planting of GM maize reached some 9.9 million ha for the whole of last year, around two-thirds of the entire maize area ( Agrow No 630, p 17). That takes in two planting periods of autumn and spring. Stacked-trait maize was planted on some 4.4 million ha, in the first year that such traits were available for planting.
