California pesticide use down in 2009
The use of pesticides subject to reporting requirements in the US state of California fell by 4.9% to 155.9 million lbs (70,715 tonnes) in 2009, according to the latest survey by the California EPA’s Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR). That represented the fourth consecutive decline, following a 6% drop in 2008 ( Agrow No 584, p 13). The volume of pesticides for agricultural use fell by 3.4% to 144.3 million lbs. Other use categories also declined, with post-harvest fumigant applications halving to 1.2 million lbs.
