Sumitomo’s 9-mth herbicide sales remain strong
Sumitomo Chemical recorded “strong” sales for its herbicides in overseas markets for the nine months ended December 31st 2009. Sales of insecticide-impregnated Olyset mosquito nets remained solid during the period, the company says. However, lower fertiliser sales and the impact of the appreciation of the yen meant that overall sales of Sumitomo’s agricultural chemicals division fell by 9.2% to ¥150,075 million ($1,663 million at the current rate). Divisional operating income rose by 2.9% to ¥15,907 million ($176 million). Pesticides accounted for 65% of the agricultural chemicals division’s fiscal 2009 sales ( Agrow No 569, p 5).
