Pakistan establishes national biosafety body
Pakistan has established a national-level body, the Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA), to monitor biosafety measures in the areas of biotechnology and trans-border infectious diseases. The PBSA was launched by the Higher Education Commission's National Core Group in Life Sciences in Islamabad in August. The PBSA includes officials from the country's research and development establishments and will act as a watchdog to monitor observance of biosafety standards in laboratory work on microbes, pathogens and transgenic materials, reports the science and technology newswire, SciDev.Net. The PBSA will report any violations to the Biosafety Directorate of the Pakistan Ministry of Environment. The Ministry finalised a set of biosafety rules in 2005 ( Agrow No 486, p 16).
