Spanish vole infestation eradicated

Spain has eradicated its vole ( Microtus arvalis) infestation, the regional Castile and Leon government says. It had mostly affected cereals, legumes and forage in the north and centre of Spain ( Agrow No 542, p 14), reaching levels of over 400 voles per ha. The Spanish government invested some €5.5 million ($8.6 million). It involved a staff of 710 “intensively” applying the rodenticide, bromadiolone, the efficacy of which was 18 times greater than previous measures, the Castile and Leon’s Ministry of Agriculture says. The Ministry cut infestation levels by 95% on grapevines last year, before implementing a three-month control plan in November ( Agrow No 535, p 11). It finds that populations have fallen to 25 per ha.
