Australia approves Bayer's TwinLink cotton test

The Australian Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) has approved Bayer CropScience’s planned field test of genetically modified insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant TwinLink cotton. The OGTR determined that the cotton posed negligible risks to health and the environment ( Agrow No 554, p 17). The cotton expresses the Bt Cry1Ab and Cry2Ae toxins for the control of lepidopteran pests. It is also tolerant to Bayer’s herbicide, Liberty (glufosinate-ammonium), but there are no plans to apply it to the crop. The 0.4 ha test is due to be conduced in Narrabri, New South Wales, in 2008-11.
