Oregano oil option for storage pest control

Oregano oil is a natural alternative to synthetic insecticides to tackle the lesser grain borer ( Rhizopertha dominica), which is a pest found in stored cereals, according to research published in the UK Society of Chemical Industry’s (SCI) Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture. Oregano oil works as well as synthetic versions, inhibiting egg laying and larval development. Although more environmentally friendly, natural insecticides “are difficult to produce on a large scale for agricultural use… [and so] the scope for them is rather limited”, says Dr Alan Baylis, the honorary secretary of the SCI’s Bioresources Group.
