UK organic farmers seek relaxed rules

A number of leading UK organic certification bodies have approached the country’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to relax the rules on organic feed standards for eggs, poultry, lamb, beef and pork. The move has come in the face of sales of organic food going down by 10% in the last three months. Conventional feed costs around half the organic feed and organic crop farmers believe they may not be able to stay in business unless the current rules are relaxed. A DEFRA spokesperson has confirmed that it is willing to consider a change, provided it complies with EU organic certification rules, national media report.
