EFSA dismisses evidence against GM crop approvals

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has dismissed claims that new studies raise environmental concerns about the possible cultivation of two genetically modified crops. The EFSA was asked by the European Commission in May to reconsider applications for cultivation of Dow AgroSciences/ DuPont's insect-resistant 1507 maize and Syngenta's insect-resistant Bt11 maize ( Agrow No 543, p 7). The Authority concludes that neither the 11 scientific publications selected and provided by the Commission nor recent peer-reviewed papers identified as relevant by the EFSA's GMO Panel invalidate the EFSA's former risk assessments of the two maize lines.
