Canadian province axes weed/feed mixes
The Canadian province of Alberta is to ban the sale of herbicide/fertiliser mixtures from January 1st 2010. The move is aimed at reducing the run-off of herbicides into water sources, says Alberta Environment Minister Rob Renner. The use of herbicide/fertiliser mixes can result in more than ten times the required amount of pesticide being applied, Mr Renner points out. The ban will not impact the agriculture or landscaping sectors as the products are used almost exclusively on domestic lawns. Products for spot application to control weeds are not covered by the ban.
