Vietnam boosts farmer training funding
The Plant Protection Department (PPD) of Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development plans to increase investment in farmer training ten-fold to $100,000 during 2009, reports the industry association, CropLife Asia. For the first time, Vietnamese rice farmers will be trained in the responsible use of pesticides. Current initiatives focus on crops such as vegetables, fruit and tea. The PPD, working in partnership with CropLife Asia, has trained about 6,800 farmers in 28 provinces and cities combined since 2003, and the proposed funding will benefit more than 2,000 farmers in 2009.
