Stacked GM maize trials in Germany

Field trials to assess the environmental impact of genetically modified insect-resistant maize will be undertaken in Germany between 2008 and 2011, according to the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)-funded website, GMO Safety. The trials will be conducted on stacked Bt maize resistant to European corn borers ( Ostrinia nubilalis) and western corn rootworms ( Diabrotica virgifera), as well as displaying herbicide tolerance. They are being funded by the BMBF and will be conducted on eight plots. Previous trials have been conducted on Bt maize resistant to only one of the two pests. One of the trials at the German University of Bayreuth will investigate the tolerance of bees to Bt maize pollen compared with conventional pollen.
