NZ authority favours GM onion tests

The New Zealand Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) has concluded that proposed field tests of genetically modified onions, leeks and garlic pose negligible risks to health and the environment. It is “highly improbable” that genetic material would escape, given the proposed field containment measures, the ERMA says. The New Zealand Institute for Crop and Food Research applied to test the GM vegetables for pest and disease resistance, herbicide tolerance and quality traits at a 2.5 ha site over ten years ( Agrow No 542, p 18). A public hearing on the application is due to be held on August 12th.
