Record fungicide use in France in 2008

There was record investment by French farmers in fungicides for disease prevention and control in 2008, reports French agricultural news website, Terre-net. Citing a study by the French Arvalis plant institute, it says that fungicide use increased by around 11% in volume and 26% in value terms. This increased use was also observed elsewhere in Europe, even in countries where parasitic pressure was less strong. The increase was primarily due to widespread infestation of Septoria spp. Terre-net says that this could well be the beginning of a sustainable wave if fungicides, such as the triazoles, were banned as a result of the proposed revision of the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414).
