Ukraine accepts first application for GMO food use
Ukraine’s Ministry of Health has accepted an application from Monsanto for the use as food of its genetically modified glyphosate-tolerant RoundUp Ready soybeans, reports the non-profit organisation, Black Sea Biotechnology Association (BSBA). This is reportedly the first instance of the country accepting an application for the use of a GMO as food. National regulations stipulate the consideration of an application within 90 days, with an additional 30 days being required for putting the product into the state registry, the BSBA says. Ukraine has adopted two new laws relating to the use of GMOs in food and the labelling of products containing GMOs.
