Brazil nine-month imports up 40%

Brazil imported 39.5% more agrochemicals in the first nine months of 2008 than in the same period last year, according to its agrochemical industry trade association, the Sindag. The rate shows a dip from the 42% rise in volume imports for the seven months to July 31st ( Agrow No 551, p 18). The country imported 174.9 tonnes, the Sindag’s information chief, Ivan Amancio Sampaio, told Agrow. The main product class was herbicides, accounting for more than half (66.8%). Brazil’s herbicide imports grew by 44.9% to 116.9 tonnes, some 44% of which was for the active ingredient, glyphosate. Fungicide imports saw the largest growth, rising by 82.3% to 25.6 tonnes. Imports of insecticides inched up from 28.3 to 29.7 tonnes, while Brazil brought in 1.3 tonnes of acaricides, a rise of 20.6% on last year’s first nine months.
