EU warns on non-approved ais in seed treatments

The European Commission has warned that active ingredients that fail to gain re-registration in the EU may not be used in treatments on seed that is destined for export. The Commission made the warning after being notified that some EU member states were allowing the use of such ais in seed treatments, provided the seed was exported outside the EU. The Commission highlighted the insecticide/nematicide, carbofuran, for which EU approvals were withdrawn at the end of 2007 ( Agrow No 523, p 6). Under the EU agrochemical registration Directive (91/414), seed treatment is considered a use and if it is carried out in the EU, even for seed intended for export, then only EU-approved ais may be used, the Commission stressed at a recent meeting of the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health.
