Swiss antibiotic use down in 2010

Switzerland's use of antibiotics in animals fell for the second consecutive year in 2010, according to a report by the medicines agency Swissmedic. A total of 66,642 kg of active substances was sold in the country last year, 3.9% less than in the previous year. Since 2008, when sales of veterinary antibiotics were at their highest, the quantity sold has fallen by 9.4%. The highest sales last year were of sulfonamides (39%), tetracyclines (23%) and penicillins (20%).
