Political pressures should not force antibiotics out of the equation

The pressure on the use of antibiotics in livestock has reached a new level of intensity, with UK proposals to ban product advertising and US discussions on banning products in a bid to reduce resistance profiles. The industry sees any such moves as counterproductive in a sector where prudent use must be maintained within a framework of optimal animal health practices. That is the view of Dr Peter Schmid , managing director of Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health’s veterinary pharmaceuticals R&D centre, in Schwabenheim, Germany, interviewed here by IBI principal analyst Ashley Yeo
