AVMA briefs US Congress on farm use of antibiotics

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has put its views on use of antibiotics in livestock and companion animals to the US Congress. "Antibiotics are necessary for veterinarians to protect the health and well-being of animals," said Dr Lloyd Keck, an animal health consultant to the poultry industry and former AVMA Congressional Science Fellow, during one of the two recent briefing sessions on Capitol Hill in Washington DC. "The benefits to animals and people outweigh the current risks associated with bacterial resistance.”
