Conference examines vaccination for FMD control in the UK

This month marks the tenth anniversary of the 2001 outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the UK, the worst recorded in the country. It is estimated to have led to the culling of 10 million cattle, sheep and pigs and to have cost the country £8 billion in lost farm and tourism revenues plus the expense of dealing with the disease. “The tragedy of the FMD outbreak of 2001 left a scar on the industry that still haunts all those who were affected either directly or indirectly,” notes the Moredun Research Institute.
