Newcastle disease resurfaces in Switzerland

The infectious viral disease was found in layer hens on a farm in Neuchâtel in the west of the country. All of the birds – some 5,000 in total – have been culled. Newcastle disease was last reported in Swiss poultry in 1998 and the country is officially recognized as free of the disease. The Federal Veterinary Agency said the case showed that infectious diseases can re-emerge at any time, despite all efforts to prevent and monitor them.
