German minister criticizes "massive" antibiotic use in poultry

A survey of broiler farms in northern Germany has found that more than 96% of birds are treated with antibiotics. The survey of farms in North Rhine-Westphalia, the first of its kind in Germany, has raised questions over the responsible use of antibiotics in the poultry industry, according to state minister for consumer protection Johannes Remmel. However, industry groups have warned against drawing premature conclusions from the report, which was limited in scope, and promised to start their own monitoring program.
