Changes to FMD vaccination in Argentina

The frequency of cattle vaccination against foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Argentina is to be halved, Senasa, the National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality has announced. From the second half of 2010, all animals older than two years will be vaccinated only once a year, whereas younger cattle will continue to receive two doses of the vaccine annually. According to Senasa, the decision is based on research demonstrating that “after receiving multiple doses of the vaccine, the immunity levels in adult cattle are enough to protect them against FMD for a period longer than 360 days.”
