US judge rules that FDA must act on sub-therapeutic antibiotics

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been ordered by a federal court to demonstrate that there is no public safety risk from the non-therapeutic (growth promotion) use of antibiotics in animal feed. If such evidence cannot be produced, then the approval for such indications should be withdrawn. However, the US Animal Health Institute (AHI) says that this ruling will simply delay the FDA’s existing plan to eliminate the use of antibiotics as a livestock growth promoter.
