Japan to launch consultation on cloned animals
The Japan Food Safety Commission has accepted a report from its investigative committee for newly developed foods stating that meat and milk from cloned cattle and pigs are as safe to eat as products obtained from traditionally reared animals. The Commission said it would now request public comments on the matter. To date, 557 cattle and 335 pigs have been cloned in Japan. The government recently requested a voluntary moratorium on their production while it investigated their safety.
