Michigan approves new farm welfare standards

The US state of Michigan is on the verge of approving legislation to ban the use of sow gestation and veal crates, as well as poultry battery cages in farms. The state House and Senate have approved a bill proposed earlier this year by representative Mike Simpson, giving producers a three year phase-out period for veal crates and a 10 year phase-out for gestation crates and battery cages.
