Rinderpest is model for disease eradication, says FAO
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has announced that rinderpest, once a devastating disease of cattle, is soon to be declared officially eradicated. The last ever outbreak of the virus was reported in Kenya in 2001. This will be only the second time in history that a disease has been globally extinguished, and the first time involving an animal disease. The first disease to be eradicated worldwide was smallpox, which was declared as such in 1980.
