Genetic advances help combat animal disease

The food security issue is rapidly rising up the political agenda. A raft of recent reports has grappled with the implications of doubling global food production in order to feed the 9 billion people expected on the planet by 2050. A presentation by Chris Warkup, director of the UK Biosciences Knowledge Transfer Network (formerly the Genesis Faraday Partnership and funded by the UK Technology Strategy Board, the Scottish Government SEEKIT Program and European Regional Development funds) to a recent UK agribusiness conference described how the “Dawn of a new age of animal breeding” can contribute to feeding the world within the next forty years, not least through reducing the animal disease burden.
