Animal welfare: towards better global standards
Animal welfare is often considered a secondary issue to animal health. However, recent outbreaks of animal diseases have heightened awareness about treating animals humanely, especially during culling. The World Organisation for Animal Health, the OIE, is developing standards to protect animal welfare in addition to its longstanding work in setting animal health standards. Animal Pharm speaks to the OIE's Sarah Kahn, head of the international trade department, about the OIE's work on animal welfare, including an important second global conference on the subject, to be held October 20th-22nd in Cairo, Egypt.
