Spain backs EU animal health priorities

Spain is backing EU animal health priorities under France's next presidency of the EU, which will begin in July 2008. Carlos Escribano, head of the Spanish ministry of agriculture's veterinary unit, supported the new policy based on monitoring and preventing animal diseases. Mr Escribano stressed that the EU should provide adequate funding for health programs in each member state. In addition, producers in the EU should be encouraged to develop new products as this would make EU exports of animal health products more competitive, he added. Elsewhere, Spain wants to address the issue of maximum residue limits of veterinary products for minor species and develop programs that will improve animal health.
