Warning on horse virus
The Florida Association of Equine Practitioners is advising horse owners in the state to vaccinate their animals against eastern equine encephalomyelitis (EEE). It says that if this year's wet weather persists, "2008 could see a significant number of cases such as happened in 2003, when 207 cases of EEE were confirmed". So far this year, five horses have died from the disease in Florida. According to the Florida Department of Agriculture, average horse deaths from EEE in the state number 70 per year. Horse mortality from the disease, which is spread to horses by mosquitoes, can reach 90%.
