Horses in Europe to be chipped

EU member states have agreed a new European regulation that will update existing equine identification, or Horse Passport, legislation. Under the new regulation, all foals born after July 1st 2009 will have to be microchipped. The new procedures could prove useful for disease control and the recovery of lost or stolen horses. This requirement will not be retrospective, and member states can approve alternative identification methods if appropriate. The UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says that the microchips will form an essential link between a horse and its passport, and that the new system will strengthen existing identification requirements for horses.
