Spain approves extra funding for bluetongue vaccination

Spain has approved an extra Euro 40m ($63m) for an emergency vaccination program against bluetongue this year. The funding will be used to buy around 32 million doses of vaccine against the BTV1 strain of the disease and 68.4 million doses of the BTV8 strain of the vaccine. The BTV1 strain has been circulating in Spain since mid-2007, moving northwards towards the end of the year. Since the beginning of this year, BTV8 has been discovered in Cantabria, making emergency vaccination a necessity, says the ministry of agriculture, the MAPA.
